Highlights

  • Mélanie Daunais and Yves Dion are occasional lottery players.
  • Dion was at work when he checked his Lotto 6/49 ticket with the Lotteries app. When $5,000,000 came up on the screen, he took a screenshot and texted it to Daunais.
  • When he didn’t hear from her, Dion called to ask if she’d looked at her messages. Hearing the excitement in her husband’s voice, she looked at the screenshot he’d sent her. He then had to convince her that he wasn’t joking.

“Bye-bye boss!”

  • The winners have already started carrying out some plans thanks to the five million dollars they took home. Dion announced he’d be retiring early the day he found out he’d won the lottery, taking the saying “bye-bye boss!” literally.
  • The couple also thought of their loved ones. As Daunais put it: “We have two great families who’re really tightly knit and we wanted to do something nice for them.”
  • Lastly, the newly minted multimillionaires intend to travel. “The problem is figuring out where to go,” said Dion. “Because anything is possible!” added Daunais.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Petro-Canada located at 545 Boulevard Henri-Bourassa Est in Montréal. The retailer will receive a 1% commission of $50,000.
